When Data Is Empty, the Sports Reporter Should Refuse to Write

When I opened the report, the first feeling was not missing data but a strange silence. There was no tournament name, no player name, no technical statistic, no match context. Every cell displayed the same abbreviation: N/A. If I tried to write a sports news article from this blank space, I would have to invent names, invent results, invent tactics. That violates the first rule I have kept for more than two decades as a sports journalist: write only when I can answer the question “what could go wrong?”; do not write when no answer exists. In Vietnamese football, transfer rumours spread faster than the truth. A player has not signed, an agent has not confirmed, yet some websites still build a magnificent story. When the stands are empty, we finally understand that noise is the heartbeat of football. I cannot use fake noise to replace a real heartbeat. Numbers can speak, but sometimes they lie; when there are no numbers, silence is the only honest answer. Some people will say: “Just write an analysis; the audience needs content.” I disagree. Vietnamese audiences are smarter; they can immediately recognize an empty article if it contains no concrete facts. Sports is not a place to project the writer’s emotions. It is a place to tell stories through evidence. I do not only read the match; I also read what players do not say. But when even the player’s name is absent, every comment becomes a meaningless echo. Therefore, the only article I can write right now is a responsible refusal: there is not enough material to confirm any player, team, or match; there is not enough basis for professional recommendations. When real data arrives, the story will be told carefully. An empty stadium is a sad poem about the loneliness of victory, but an empty article is not a poem; it is just laziness in disguise.
